Author, Marnie O’Bryan, steps inside the complex lived experience of being a First Nations student in predominantly non-Indigenous schools in Australia. Stories are told through first-hand narratives interviews of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who have attended boarding schools all over the country recorded over a 9-year period.
Boarding and Australia’s First Peoples encourages new and collaborative approaches to Indigenous education programs. It assists practitioners and policy makers to critically review the structures, policies, and cultural assumptions embedded in the institutions in which they work, to the benefit of First Nations students and their families.
Marnie is a Research Fellow at CAEPR, an Honorary Fellow at Melbourne Uni and Co-Chair with Prof Tony Dreise of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

This beautifully designed anthology gives cause for critical reflection by educators at a time when First Nations peoples are starting to break free of derogatory stereotypes and find solace in their communities and cultures.
Thomas Mayor is a Torres Strait Islander man born on Larrakia country in Darwin. As an advocate for the Uluru Statement from the Heart, Thomas travelled Australia for 18 months carrying the sacred canvas and garnering support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Thomas is the author of Finding The Heart of The Nation, Dear Son and the children’s books – Finding Our Heart and Freedom Day.

Robert Fitzgerald, former Royal Commissioner, on the Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse Royal Commission presented to the National Indigenous Education and Boarding Symposium held in March 2018. The findings and recommendations have an impact on boarding schools and residences. This interview focuses on the education sector and in particular Indigenous students.
The Study Away report frames the issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander secondary students who study away from home. This interview with one of the report authors Genevieve Hassall follows her presentation to the National Indigenous Education and Boarding Symposium in March 2018. The report was released by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in December 2017.
