Author, Marnie O’Bryan, steps inside the complex lived experience of being a First Nations student in predominantly non-Indigenous schools in Australia. Stories are told through first-hand narratives interviews of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who have attended boarding schools all over the country recorded over a 9-year period.

Boarding and Australia’s First Peoples encourages new and collaborative approaches to Indigenous education programs. It assists practitioners and policy makers to critically review the structures, policies, and cultural assumptions embedded in the institutions in which they work, to the benefit of First Nations students and their families.

Marnie is a Research Fellow at CAEPR, an Honorary Fellow at Melbourne Uni and Co-Chair with Prof Tony Dreise of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Robert Fitzgerald, former Royal Commissioner, on the Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse Royal Commission presented to the National Indigenous Education and Boarding Symposium held in March 2018. The findings and recommendations have an impact on boarding schools and residences. This interview focuses on the education sector and in particular Indigenous students.
